TOKYO-bound Zambia women football team, Shepolopolo, will face Team Great Britain next month in the two sides’ pre-Olympic Games warm-up match in England.
Team GB will host Shepolopolo at Championship club Stoke City’s bet365 Stadium on July 1.
According to Goal, this will be Zambia’s side debut meeting against a European team since playing their first non-African opponent, Chile, on November 28, 2019, in Santiago in a friendly match.
Zambia won 2-1.
Bruce Mwape’s team kicked off their pre-Olympic camp in late March when they played Banyana Banyana on April 10 away in Johannesburg in a match they lost 3-1 to South Africa.
Zambia has endured two friendly setbacks since then, starting with a cancelled home date against Kenya that was penned for the end of April that fell through after the guests pulled out due to Covid-19 administrative issues in Nairobi.
Then a visit to Mozambique on May 30 was cancelled due to operational reasons.
Olympic debutants Zambia is in Group F in Tokyo where they are drawn against Brazil, China and Holland.
Shepolopolo will play their debut Olympic Games fixture on July 21 against Holland in Miyagi.
“We are honoured to welcome Zambia to Great Britain for this match. They have excelled in securing qualification for the Olympics and their achievement and the legacy they will provide will also help grow the women’s game in Zambia” Team GB coach Hege Riise told The Athletic.
