THE American government has commended Zambia for being the first African country to complete and conduct a COVID-19 prevalence rate survey which has revealed that most Zambians have remained susceptible to infections.
Government through the Ministry of Health has also indicated that several other surveys on COVID-19 are at implementation stage and that one is on characteristics of COVID-19.
“The United States (U.S.) Government would like to commend Zambia for undertaking the COVOD-19 prevalence rate survey as they are the first in Africa,” U.S. Embassy Chargé d’affaires David Young has said in a virtual address.
During the COVID-19 update on Tuesday (August 7, 2020) Zambia National Public Health Institute Director Victor Mukonka has warned 50 percent of the population risks getting infected with the Coronavirus if the country relaxes in adhering to public health guidelines .
Professor Mukonka said the prevalence rate survey which was conducted in six districts between July 3 and 31, 2020 on selected respondents indicates that 10 percent of the Zambian population is infected with COVID-19.
The survey also reveals that men and the elderly were more at risk of getting infected with COVID-19.
Professor Mukonka said the COVID-19 surveys being implemented in Zambia are aimed at establishing whether the virus is severe as what broke out in other countries or it has mutated.
