THE mobile telephone subsector has recorded a 12.8 percent increase in revenue performance in the first half of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019.
ZICTA says the subsector has recorded a revenue increase from K2.1 billion in the first half of 2019 to K2.4 billion during the first half of 2020 on a year to date basis.
“Airtime sales and data sales have continued to account for the largest proportion of revenue for the mobile telephone sector. However, a noted reduction in call termination fees as well as sales of products of 13.2 percent and 35.6 percent respectively were observed during the period under review,” the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Sector 2020 Mid-Year Market Performance Report issued in Lusaka by ZICTA and made available to the Techwatch News reads in part.
The report further indicates that the total number of active internet subscriptions in the country has increased from 9.1 million subscriptions recorded in the first half of 2019 to 9.5 million subscriptions reported at the end of June 2020, reflecting an improvement of 3.6 percent.
It adds that the internet penetration rate has increased from 52.6 percent to 52.9 percent between June 2019 and June 2020.
“The equipped capacity for the first half of 2020 among the mobile network operators increased by 29.1 percent to reach 102,378 Megabits per second (Mbps) from 79,290 Mbps reported in the first half of 2019. Overall, capacity usage has increased by 56.9 percent while the volume of internet traffic utilised has also increased by 94.7 percent during the review period,” notes the report.
ZICTA further explains that the total number of telecommunication towers in Zambia has also increased from 2,462 reported at the end of the first half of 2019 to 3,245 reported at the end of the first half of 2020, representing an increase of 15.1 percent.
