ELECTORAL Commission of Zambia has announced that the voter registration exercise which was scheduled to commence on October 19, 2020, has been moved to October 28, 2020.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Kryticous Nshindano said this is due to the extension of the mobile issuance of National Registration Cards (NRCs) for the first and second phases.
Mr Nshindano explained during a briefing that the mobile voter registration exercise which was scheduled to start on October 19 to November 20, 2020, will commence two days before the close of NRC issuance on October 28, 2020.
He said the commission wants to ensure that eligible citizens access NRCs and voters’ cards in order to exercise their right to vote during the 2021 general elections and beyond.
“The commission has noted that the Department of National Registration, Passports and Citizenship (DNRPC) has extended the period of mobile issuance of NRCS by 10 days from 10th September to 19th September 2020 in the first phase and the second phase will run from 40 days from 20th September to 30th October 2020,” he said.
“To ensure that no one who has obtained an NRC is disenfranchised, the Commission has been prompted to reschedule the dates for the registration of voters. The mobile voter registration exercise which was scheduled to commence on 19th October 2020 to 20th November 2020 will now be conducted from 28th October 2020 to 30th November 2020 to accommodate eligible citizens who would have obtained their NRCs,” Mr Nshindano said.
