A student’s union leader at the Copperbelt University has been arrested by police in Kitwe for theft by servant and forgery.
Bright Chanda, 25, a Copperbelt University Students Union (COBUSU) Finance Secretary, was apprehended for alleged theft of cash amounting to K95, 990 from the union account.
Copperbelt Province Deputy Police Commissioner, Bothwell Namuswa has confirmed the arrest in a statement in Ndola yesterday.
“Theft by servant and forgery, occurred between 3 March 2020 and 19 June 2020 at Zanaco Kitwe business centre in Kitwe and Zanaco Manda hill in Lusaka,” Mr Namuswa said.
He added that Michael Sinkala 24, a student and COBUSU Prime Minister reported on behalf of the students union that students’ money amounting to K95 990 was stolen from the account by the accused.
Mr Namuswa said Chanda was one of the two signatories of the named student account.
The Deputy Copperbelt Police Commissioner further explained that the suspect is alleged to have forged the signature for the Dean of Students, Alisala Mulambya who happens to be the other signatory.
“So Chanda is in police custody and we are following this matter and more arrests will be made,” he said.
