AN American company has been engaged to upgrade the railway line infrastructure in the country to a standard gauge to facilitate the movement of high-speed trains.
The engagement the American transport firm follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Railnet International and Government through the Transport and Communications Ministry.
The American company has already started conducting feasibility studies on the upgrade of the railway infrastructure, according to Transport Ministry Permanent Secretary Misheck Tembo.
However, there have been concerns raised by both parties to the agreement over the encroachment on the Zambia Railways land where people have built houses and churches.
They wondered where Railnet will build the new infrastructure with the current developments that are taking place along the line of railway.
“This is unacceptable, stop building on Zambia Railways Limited land, you are wasting your resources because we shall soon move in to demolish the structures,” Mr Tembo urged.
